O AUTOROVI
The crisis afflicting political discourse in many western democraciestoday is often explained in terms of a fragmentation of thepublic sphere. This volume critically probes the legacy of JürgenHabermas's ground-breaking study The Structural Transformationof the Public Sphere and considers how the more recent work ofthe Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor can help us conceptualisethe formation of the public sphere as part of a new socialimaginary in the long nineteenth century. Whereas scholars havetraditionally approached the topic in terms of the history of institutionsand technology, this volume considers the vital role played byart and literature in shaping our understanding of the public sphereacross a range of national and transnational settings. How did theway the public sphere is imagined change during the long nineteenthcentury? And how can these changes be mapped againsta transition from a cosmopolitan concept of the public sphere toone conditioned by nationalistic thinking?
